Survey of the Port of Weipa: Port Marine Baseline Surveys and Surveys for Introduced Marine Pests (548K) |
PCQ's environmental program (EcoPorts) is presently undertaking biological surveys of all of it’s Queensland trading ports in order to determine the native biodiversity and to detect introduced marine species. The port of Weipa was surveyed for endemic biota and introduced species in October 1999. The survey primarily focussed on habitats in the vicinity of the berths in the Embly River; samples were also collected at the shipping channel outside the mouth of the river. The selection of habitats for sampling, and the survey methodology, broadly followed the sampling protocols for Australian port surveys developed by the CSIRO Centre for Research on Introduced Marine Species (CRIMP) and outlined in Hewitt and Martin (1996). |

Port of Weipa Long Term Seagrass Monitoring August 2006 (8816K) |
This report details results of the August 2006 seagrass survey which forms part of the established annual long term seagrass monitoring program for Weipa. Results of this survey indicate that human activities in Weipa including dredging and other port and urban activities were unlikely to have had a significant impact on seagrasses in 2006. The continued decline of some of the most dense meadows in the area may have implications to their value as a fisheries habitat and may warrant closer inspection in future surveys should trends continue. |

Port of Weipa Long Term Seagrass Monitoring 2003-2005 (988K) |
Seagrass meadows in the Port of Weipa have changed substantially during the six years of seagrass monitoring. The monitoring program indicates that despite some seagrass declines, the Weipa marine environment is relatively healthy with observed changes likely to be associated with regional and local climatic factors and the nature of the seagrass meadows rather than port related impacts. |

Port of Weipa - Long Term Seagrass Monitoring - September 2004 (4835K) |
The monitoring program for Weipa indicates that despite some seagrass declines, the marine environment is relatively healthy with observed changes likely to be associated with regional climatic factors rather than anthropogenic or port related impacts. The scope of our monitoring has been expanded to incorporate more detailed analysis of climate and fisheries data, and a community based seagrass monitoring program. We will report on these results in an Eco-ports monograph following the 2005 survey. |

Port of Weipa Long Term Seagrass Monitoring Progress Report – September 2004
NB: LARGE FILE (4835K) |
Recent monitoring surveys of the Port of Weipa have seen some significant changes to intertidal Enhalus seagrass meadows. These meadows had declined in density (biomass) and become patchier. The most likely cause of the observed change was desiccation of Enhalus plants when they were exposed at low tide (“burning”).The monitoring program for Weipa indicates that despite some seagrass declines, the marine environment is relatively healthy with observed changes likely to be associated with regional climatic factors rather than anthropogenic or port related impacts. |
