COMMUNITY

No major residential communities exist around the Port of Skardon River.

ENVIRONMENT

Skardon River is an important breeding area for Estuarine crocodiles and Green turtles.

There are extensive areas of mangroves, wetlands and saltpans in the region.

A marine habitat resources survey was carried out in 2002 by the Department of Primary Industries. The study noted that the area comprises a diverse range of ecologically important marine habitats. Many of these areas such as mangroves, saltpans, rock bars and marine swamps are likely to be of high importance to local fisheries.

The mouth of the Skardon River is bordered by sand dunes vegetated with Casuarina sp. woodland, grasslands and heath.

The intertidal region at the mouth of the river comprises extensive sandbars that border the main channel. This area contains oyster beds, many schools of baitfish, and larger predatory fish including barramundi.

Extensive fringing mangroves have been identified along the Skardon River.

There are small seagrass meadows in the river, which are considered to be variable between years and seasons.

PCQ has undertaken the following environmental initiatives at the Port of Skardon River:
  • PCQ obtained an approval in December 2002 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the operation of the Port of Skardon River;
  • marine resource mapping; and
  • development of an oil spill response plan.
