SECURITY

PCQ's bulk export ports, which have trading links with countries throughout the world, have new security arrangements in place. PCQ worked closely with port facility operators and port service providers in its ports to ensure the deadline of 1 July 2004 set down by the Australian government for implementation of new security measures was met.

The new maritime security requirements come into force under the International Shipping and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. In Australia, the Maritime Transport Security Act and Regulations enacts these requirements as legislation.

PCQ has submitted and has approved Maritime Security plans for:
  • Hay Point
  • Abbot Point
  • Lucinda
  • Mourilyan
  • Cape Flattery
  • Thursday Island
  • Skardon River
  • Weipa
  • Karumba

These ports are now security-regulated ports.

Port facility operators and port service providers in these ports have also had security plans approved by the Department of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS).

Some of the new security requirements in these ports will restrict access to some areas of the port that have been traditionally enjoyed by the public. These measures are designed to protect the community and people employed in the port area. PCQ has distributed community newsletters in each port area detailing how the new security measures at each port might affect the local communities. An electronic copy of each newsletter can be found on the relevant port page in the "Our Ports" section of the website.

WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY

PCQ supports its high safety performance with a Workplace Heath and Safety Management System based on AS/NZS 4801:2001, which documents the safe working procedures and practices required in the workplace.

PCQ uses a risk-management approach to identify potential workplace risks and implements appropriate controls, including task redesign, to manage risks to an acceptable level. Assessment of risks in the workplace is carried out through a Job Safety Analysis process.

Because a healthy lifestyle contributes to good health and safety outcomes, PCQ supports a healthy lifestyle of its staff through a number of initiatives such as a contribution to gym membership, personal health assessments and regular information on a healthy lifestyle in staff newsletters.
