The Right to Information Act 2009 will replace the Freedom of Information Act 1992 on 1 July 2009. The Queensland Government has made a commitment to provide access to information held by the Government, unless on balance it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information.
In a significant change regarding access to documents held by Governments, Ministers, and agencies the Right to Information Act 2009 aims to make more information available, provide equal access to information across all sectors of the community, and provide appropriate protection for individual’s privacy.
What is the Information Privacy Act 2009?
The Information Privacy Act 2009 applies to the collection of personal information, regardless of when it came into existence, and to the storage, handling, accessing, amendment, management, transfer, use and disclosure of personal information regardless of when it was collected.
An individual who has had access to a document of an agency or a document of a Minister, may apply to the agency or Minister for amendment of any part of the individual’s personal information contained in the document that the individual claims is inaccurate, incomplete, out of date or misleading.
PCQ supports the Queensland Government's approach to giving the community greater access to information through the Right to Information Act 2009 and the Information Privacy Bill 2009.
