OVERVIEW
PCQ is responsible for thirteen port locations which handle a variety of cargoes:- the trading ports of Hay Point (one of the largest bulk coal export ports in the world), Abbot Point, Lucinda, Mourilyan, Cape Flattery, Weipa, Karumba, and Skardon River
- the community ports of Thursday Island and Quintell Beach
- the non-trading ports of Maryborough, Cooktown, and Burketown.
The trading ports handle bulk export commodities, while the community ports supply neighbouring populations with essential general cargo and fuel. The non-trading ports are held for strategic purposes, should a commercial need arise.
At each port, PCQ is responsible for strategic planning, operational issues, infrastructure development, security and emergency response planning, protection of the environment, and maintaining navigable port depths. Pilotage and port navigation is controlled by Queeensland Transport. In general, PCQ utilises outside service providers for stevedoring and towage operations.
PCQ trading ports handled 121.1 million tonnes of bulk exports in 2006-07, estimated in value at over $15 billion.
