PCQ's innovative EcoPorts program has been in place for many years. Its aim is to achieve ecologically sustainable operation and development of the many ports that PCQ manages.

At the major trading ports of Queensland, economic development and the protection of the natural environment come sharply into focus. The importance of expanded sea trade - particularly exports - to national prosperity need not rule out a preserved and protected environment around port areas.

PCQ recognises that trade, exports and shipping do not have exclusive rights to limited coastal sites and marine areas for port infrastructure and shipping lanes. The port and shipping industry should fit into the multiple-use model of natural resource management.

PCQ activities, despite their economic importance, should not impact unnecessarily on biological diversity, basic ecological processes, valuable marine resources such as fisheries and other uses of the marine environment such as traditional and indigenous life-styles, tourism and recreation.

As a result, PCQ has adopted a pro-active, strategic approach to environmental management and set a high industry standard.
