PCQ SUPPORTS JOBS FOR BOWEN COMMUNITY

Ports Corporation of Queensland (PCQ) has been working with Girudala Community Co-op as part of lifting awareness of upcoming employment opportunities at Abbot Point.

PCQ Chief Executive Officer, Brad Fish, said the Corporation was keen to offer local individuals and groups assistance and advice which could help in future opportunities.

Most recently, PCQ Regional Relationship Manager, Matthew Magin attended a course hosted by Girudala on how Girudala people might best skill themselves for employment within civil construction.

Girudala is committing time and resources into securing sustainable employment for community members by arranging training, developing relationships with contractors and mentoring people and their families into a fulfilling employment cycle.

Mr Magin provided the group with an overview of the upcoming expansions at Abbot Point and urged the participants to keep working hard and undertake appropriate training wherever possible, so they are best equipped to secure sustainable jobs on construction and permanent operations at the port.

Mr Magin commented that the participants were encouraged to upgrade their skills to take advantage of the enormous potential arising from the Abbot Point expansions and other associated projects.

The State Government gave the go ahead for the $95 million Abbot Point Coal Terminal expansion project last month which will take capacity at the terminal from 21 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 25 mtpa (X25).

The Girudala Employment Co-ordinator will provide a compendium of resumes for successful contractors who will then consider those in their recruitment process.

Over 120 workers will be employed in the project, with work on the X25 project to start in July and be completed by mid-2009.

Expansion beyond X25 is currently with the State Government for consideration and is dependent on the demand from coal customers and construction of the Goonyella to Abbot Point Expansion.

Mr Fish said PCQ was committed to the sustainable development of both Abbot Point and the wider region and values the close links it has with the local Bowen community.

All local businesses are welcome to attend an information forum which will be held at 7am on Wednesday 21 May at the Queens Beach Motor Hotel. The forum aims to raise awareness within the business community of the upcoming infrastructure projects and speakers will include Queensland Rail (QR), Ergon Energy and PCQ.

Please advise Queens Beach Motor Hotel on 4786 1555 if you are able to attend. The cost of attendance is $20 per person for breakfast and venue hire.
