QUINTELL BEACH $2 MILLION BARGE RAMP UPGRADE ASSURES SEA TRANSPORT LINK FOR LOCKHART RIVER

Ports Corporation of Queensland (PCQ) is investing almost $2 million to upgrade the barge ramp at the remote Port of Quintell Beach.

Quintell Beach services the Aboriginal community of Lockhart River and surrounding area and is located 600km north of Cairns.

PCQ CEO, Brad Fish, said work on the project has started and was due for completion by the end of December.

“The barge ramp and causeway is vital to the community’s existence and this work will mean the ramp should not need major maintenance for 40 years or more.’

He said the ultimate life of the work being undertaken would be very dependent on weather conditions and that marine facilities in the far north of the State are always at risk of cyclone damage.

“This work will be welcomed by Lockhart River residents with the ramp upgrade meaning the facility will not deteriorate further and result in the local communities not being able to receive their weekly supplies,” Mr Fish said.

The facilities at the port comprise a barge ramp which was constructed in 1972 and upgraded in 1985 and 2000. Inspections in 2006 revealed a hole in the existing slab and some subsidence.

The current project comprises two specific jobs – grout injection of the barge ramp and construction of a new concrete roadway.
