PCQ BOARD VISIT LUCINDA AND MOURILYAN

Ports Corporation of Queensland’s (PCQ) Board of Directors have just completed a successful visit to the ports of Mourilyan and Lucinda.

While at the ports, the directors discussed issues with stakeholders from the region, the centre of Queensland’s sugar production.

The PCQ directors inspected the port of Mourilyan and Queensland Sugar’s operations before meeting stakeholders.

There are a number of new developments at Mourilyan, including the Pentarch Forest Products proposal to export about 20,000 tonnes of softwood logs a year and the company’s plan to establish a woodchip terminal at the port. This could see up to 150,000 tonnes of the product exported to Japan annually.

PCQ has spent $2.3 million to carry out earthworks on 1.5ha of drain infill area, enabling new trades such as woodchips to be located at Mourilyan port.

A cattle-holding yard has been built and a ship simulation exercise has taken place this month to confirm the size of livestock carriers able to call at the port.

In a bid to keep towage rates for customers competitive, PCQ and Cairns Port Authority are currently drafting a joint invitation to qualified towage operators with the idea that efficiencies might be gained through tug sharing between Cairns, Mourilyan and Lucinda.

The PCQ board also inspected the port of Lucinda and its offshore wharf facilities, ahead of a meeting with local stakeholders.
