SECURITY TIGHTENS AT HAY POINT

Ports Corporation of Queensland (PCQ) has reminded Mackay and district boaties of security arrangements at the Port of Hay Point on the eve of the busiest boating time of the year.

As a result of continual breaches with boats entering exclusion and restricted water areas, PCQ has requested the Mackay District Police Service to provide increased patrols at the port during the holiday period.

Trespassers in the exclusion areas are subject to fines of up to $5000. PCQ’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Gary Campbell said that in future a zero tolerance would be adopted.

On 1 July 2004, new security arrangements came into force at all Australian ports that handle international vessels.

Mr Campbell said that there were certain areas in and around the Port of Hay Point that boat users were not permitted access to without authorisation.

These exclusion areas are to protect the security of the facility and to protect the safety of the public.

One exclusion area of particular interest is the tug harbour. This area is bounded by the front security gate to both pylons, to the point of the breakwater and the area within 50 metres of the two main wharf structures. Signs on navigation aids warn that the area is restricted.

The Half Tide Public Boat Ramp has detailed signs indicating the exclusion zones that apply in the port.

Mr Campbell said the Hay Point facilities were critical to both Queensland and Australia’s interests and that all agencies involved expected that security and safety of these facilities will be enforced.
