PROJECT “WASTE” TURNED INTO COMMUNITY BENEFIT
The Abbot Point Coal Terminal Stage 2 Expansion being undertaken by Ports Corporation of Queensland (PCQ) has provided an unexpected side benefit for local schools and community groups.
As part of the expansion project, areas of the site have been cleared for environmental and site development reasons.
Although some non-remnant and regrowth vegetation had to be cut down in the site area, the resultant clearing has not been wasted.
PCQ Chief Executive Officer, Brad Fish, said schools and community groups in the area have had truck loads of tree mulch delivered free of charge to utilise in gardens and other landscaping.
Students from Merinda State School were happy to lend a hand and make good use of the mulch on gardens at the school.
Mr Fish said that over the next few months 20 truck loads of mulch will be donated to schools, day care establishments, sporting organisations and indigenous groups within the local community.
“We try and limit any impact on the environment in any projects which we undertake and in this case the mulching will in its own way help with creating some environmental benefit in the shire.”
He said PCQ was always keen to assist the welfare and interests of groups within the port community it services.
Work on the expansion at Abbot Point is now well progressed with all site clearing work complete and construction of foundations for the new conveyors and stacker reclaimer underway.
