
PCQ PORTS ESTABLISH TENTH CONSECUTIVE RECORD
Ports Corporation of Queensland’s (PCQ) regional ports have continued their remarkable collective growth, establishing their 10th consecutive record and breaking the previous record by almost 10 percent.
The ports under PCQ’s banner exported almost 120 million tonne of product in 2004/05, estimated in value at $8.8 billion. PCQ’s profit for the past financial year was $14.2 million before tax.
PCQ Chairman, Leonie Taylor, said the coal ports of Hay Point and Abbot Point were the largest contributors to the total growth, collectively increasing throughput by almost 10% to just short of 100 million tonne.
Ms Taylor said it had been a successful year overall with the bauxite port of Weipa also establishing a record as well as strong record performances at the sugar ports of Mourilyan and Lucinda.
Among the highlights for the year:
• Hay Point took the title of Australia and the world’s largest bulk coal export port
• five of the ports set individual records
• PCQ reaffirmed its place as Australia’s largest port authority by throughput.
New individual port records were established at:
• Hay Point (coal) 85.5 mt
• Abbot Point (coal) 12.8 mt
• Weipa (bauxite) 15.5 mt
• Mourilyan (sugar) 715,000 tonnes
• Lucinda (sugar) 675,000 tonnes.
At Hay Point, the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal (DBCT), leased by Babcock and Brown Infrastructure, exported 50.2 mt, representing a record and up by over 15% on the previous year.
BMA Coal’s owned and operated Hay Point Services Terminal at the port also set a new record of 35.3 mt, up by 3.95% over the previous best in 2003/04.
At Abbot Point, the Newlands – Collinsville – Abbot Point Project (NCA Project) exported a record 12.8 mt of coal, marginally up on the previous record set in 2002/03.
In Weipa, Comalco exported a record 15.5 mt of bauxite, up by 13.5% over the previous years record.
A record total of 715,000 tonnes of sugar was exported through Mourilyan, up by 4.7% on the previous year and almost 100,000 tonne of molasses.
At Lucinda a record 675,000 tonnes of sugar was exported, topping a record established in 1997/98.
At the other PCQ ports:
• Karumba – 871,000 tonnes of zinc, 77,000 tonnes of lead, 24,000 tonnes of general cargo and 13,000 head of live cattle were handled being a 12% reduction on the previous year.
• Cape Flattery – 1.3 mt of silica sand was shipped, down by 28% on the previous year.
• Thursday Island – 76,000 tonnes of general cargo passed through the port, down by 17% on the previous year.
• Quintell Beach – 3,600 tonnes of cargo was handled which is a record and up by 52%.
