TEMPORARY PUBLIC RESTRICTIONS AT THE PORT OF MOURILYAN
Vandalism at the Port of Mourilyan has forced the temporary closure of the commercial area of the port.
Ports Corporation of Queensland (PCQ) has asked for the public’s understanding during the closure period which will end on Monday morning (April 4). The closure will be in place this evening and night and for the weekend.
The urgent action was taken following a break-in and discharge of a fire extinguisher on the port’s sugar shiploader on the weekend.
The shiploader is a key part of the port's operations and any vandalism has the potential to disrupt exports from the port.
About 700,000 tonnes of sugar is exported from Mourilyan annually valued at about $150 million. PCQ’s action was not taken lightly and considered its responsibilities to protect infrastructure which is vital to the region’s economy.
It is believed minors were responsible for the break-in and historically the likelihood of such events increases during holiday periods.
PCQ regrets any inconvenience and has asked the public to report any suspicious behaviour or unauthorized entry onto the main wharf.
Significant areas remain available in the port area for public access and recreational activities, including fishing.
